Each booking record has the person's name, charges, arrest date, and bond details. These records are public under IC 5-14-3, Indiana's Access to Public Records Act. Because Union County is so small, the sheriff's office may have limited staff for records requests. You can call or visit the office in Liberty to request copies. Allow some extra time if the staff is busy with other duties.

Union County is the second smallest county in Indiana by population. The jail is small and handles a low volume of bookings. Some inmates may be housed in neighboring counties like Wayne or Fayette if the local facility cannot hold them. In those cases, the booking record stays with Union County even though the person is physically held elsewhere.

Note: Given Union County's small size, the sheriff's office handles multiple functions. The same deputies who make arrests also serve court papers and transport inmates. Records requests may take a bit longer than in larger counties.

Because Union County has so few inmates at any given time, the jail roster on INjail may be very short or even empty on some days. If you cannot find someone there, they may have already been released or could be housed in a neighboring county's jail. Call the Union County Sheriff's Office for the latest information.

Union County Court Records

Criminal cases from Union County arrests go through the Union Circuit Court in Liberty. The court clerk handles filings, schedules hearings, and maintains records. You can search these records for free on MyCase, the state court portal. Enter a name or case number to find charges, hearing dates, and case outcomes.

Union County does not have a separate superior court, so all criminal cases go through the circuit court. This means all cases are handled by one judge, which can sometimes mean longer wait times for hearings. The clerk's office is small but responsive to records requests.

Court records are more complete than booking logs. They follow a case from the initial filing through final disposition. If the prosecutor filed charges after a Union County arrest, the case will show up in MyCase. New filings may take a day or two to appear. The system covers both active cases and older closed cases.

Union County Expungement

Indiana Code 35-38-9 provides a process for sealing certain arrest and conviction records in Union County. You file a petition with the Union Circuit Court in Liberty. Arrests that did not lead to charges can be sealed immediately. Dismissed cases qualify after one year. Misdemeanor convictions have a five-year waiting period, and Level 6 felonies need eight years.

The judge reviews the petition and looks at the offense type, elapsed time, and your record since the case. If the judge grants the petition, the records are sealed from public view. They will no longer appear in MyCase or ISP criminal history searches. Law enforcement keeps access, but the public cannot see them.

Contact the Union County court clerk in Liberty for the forms and filing fees. Because this is a small court, the clerk may be able to walk you through the process. You can also consult with an attorney in the area. Indiana law allows only one expungement petition, so make sure all eligible cases are included.
